I'm currently in 10th grade and have the opportunity to take unlimited college classes at a community college. How impressive is this to colleges? Is it more worth it to take slightly fewer courses if it gives me time to build up extracurriculars?
I think you already have a good idea of your situation. You understand that performing well in dual-enrollment classes is the best way, period, to show that you are ready for college-level coursework. But keep in mind, I said "performing well". Only do them if you can handle the time commitment, as DE classes can sometimes take up lots of time outside of school (at least in my DE program, make sure to do research on yours).
DE is generally good for applications, so I would take at least one class if you have interest in the field, can make the time commitment work, and can do well in it. Also, on your inquiry about EC's, remember that those will usually be a more significant part of your application than course load, so if you can allocate a tangible amount of time towards those, that's also positive. Overall, I would recommend trying DE if you can make it work.
Good luck, and I hope you do well.
Dual-enrollment can really boost your college apps, but only if you can handle the workload and do well. It’s better to take a manageable number of classes and still have time for extracurriculars, since ECs often matter just as much or more than extra credits.
