So I'm a freshman in high school but I'm already freaking out over college. I've been split between going into law or medicine for quite some time now, and I've been stressing over it a lot too. But that's besides the point. What I'm trying to say is that it is now time for course selection for next year (sophomore year), and I don't know if I should try going for all honors next year. My current schedule is: English 1 Hon, Spanish 2, AP World History Hon, Algebra 1 Hon, Acc Biology, Accounting, and one other tech related course that combines photography, videography, graphic design, editing, and a bunch of other stuff. I guess what I'm trying to say is, my schedule this year is packed, with clubs, programs, and all that other stuff. I feel like I'm prepared enough to take all honors next year, including doubling up on math and taking another business class, but every time I think of it, I get anxious in case it'll be too hard for me and I'll have to move down a level. Should I be taking all honors? I know there's probably not much you guys can give me on my course selection, but any and all advice/thoughts at this point would help!
I totally get where you're coming from! Being a freshman and already stressing about college is pretty intense. You're doing a lot already with your schedule this year, so it's natural to freak out a bit about next year. When it comes to choosing all honors classes, think about the workload since honors classes can be super demanding. Since your current schedule is already packed, ask yourself if you’ll have enough time to keep up with everything because you don’t want to overload yourself and lose out on the fun stuff. Also, consider the subjects you’re really into; if math and business excite you, maybe doubling up could be awesome since you’re passionate about it. But if you’re nervous about it being too much, it’s perfectly okay to take a more balanced course load. Don’t hesitate to chat with your teachers or a school counselor because they know you and can give you great advice on whether all honors is a good idea for you. If you’re really thinking about going for all honors, maybe you could take just a couple at first and see how it feels because you can always switch things later if it’s too much. Remember, it’s all about challenging yourself but also not burning out. College is still a ways off, and there are so many paths to get there, so just take it one step at a time, and you’ll figure it out! You've got this!
In the end the decision is up to you but if you can manage it this year, I think that you are on a great path to success. My experience is that I took all honors freshman year and this year i dropped down in math and science because I heard it was hard, big mistake but i was able to talk to my school counselor to approve a change to go back to honors math. However, especially if you want to pursue a career in the medical field, consider taking honors science so that colleges can see that you are challenging yourself and working hard to achieve your goals.
If you excel in the subjects you will be taking Honors for, go for it. If one subject is usually pretty hard for you, you don't want to risk hurting your GPA, even if it adds weight. For example, if math isn't your strong suit, maybe just take normal Geometry next year (Geometry is a far different math than Algebra). It depends on the student and the curriculum.
Personally, I'm taking all honors/APs this year and I wish I didn't take Honors Precalc as it will be my first B (or B-/+) in my entire high school career. Just make sure you can handle the coursework. Maybe ask some upperclassmen about how hard it is?
