How to use grade level in essays
Answered

If I'm writing about 5th grade do I say "5th grade" or "fifth grade"? Is it hyphenated? Also if its hyphenated does it count as 1 or 2 words for word count?

Either work. It doesn't really matter that much whether you use 5th grade or fifth grade. The most important thing, though, is just to keep it consistent. That means that if you use 5th in the beginning, you should keep using 5th until the end and vice versa. Don't switch around from 5th to fifth or from fifth to 5th throughout the essay. Stay consistent and you should be fine. Usually, hyphenated words count as 1 word, but I wouldn't recommend hyphenating fifth-grade or 5th-grade because it just isn't grammatically correct, as these are two separate words. I hope this was helpful!
