Asking for copy of rec letter?
Answered

Is it alright to ask teachers for a copy of the letter of recommendation they wrote for you? I need letters for scholarship applications and since my counselor sent me a copy of the one she wrote for me, I assume they're all submitted by the student rather than through a portal type thing without the student ever seeing them like for college apps. I assume the letters my teachers wrote for me are stronger than the counselor one, so I would rather submit those, and I also just really want to know what they wrote about me lol. Thank you!

So FERPA prohibits you from seeing the rec letter but it’s perfectly fine to have the teacher submit the same rec letter through a portal. If it’s not through a portal it’s likely through email. If it’s not email I’d ask the teacher if they can slightly tweak it to fit the scholarship then you can see that but I’d advise against looking at the college letter.

Hope this helps and feel free to comment if you’s like clarification as I’d be more than happy to help!

Just ask them to seal it

You can ask for a letter of recommendation for the scholarship application, but you should not ask for a copy of the previous letter of recommendation if you previously waived your right to read it.
