My mother attended a small school and received a certificate, as did my stepfather. Am I a first-generation student?
Answered

Hello!

Both of my parents went to OSU-Newark, COTC, and my mother attended Bradford College, but neither of them received a degree (only a certificate). Am I considered a first-generation student?

I think I know the answer but would like an expert opinion.

Thank you!

If you were raised by someone who did graduate from a 4-year college, then you are not a first-gen. If your parents/guardians graduated from any four-year bachelor degree-granting college or university, anywhere in the world, then you are not a first-gen. Furthermore Yes. Being a first-gen student means that your parent(s) did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family member's level of education.
