Admissions Advice

What are some good extracurriculars that I can do based on my interests from home?

I am sophomore, and when I calculated my chances the main area I need to improve is on my extracurriculars. My intended major is computer science, at ivy league schools like Stanford. I love to draw, and code. With these interests, what are some good things I could do to stand out? Please let me know what is your advice.

Join a coding club, math contests, robotics competitions, and participate in science fairs. :)

I agree. Is there a FIRST Robotics program in your area? If not, you could help start one, which would look good for extracurriculars as well. There's a lot of block coding and Java involved in programming the robot, as well as a design component that could show off your drawing skills

I agree with what other people are saying, robotics or engineering competitions always look good. You could also make a portfolio with personal projects, I think that could help and it is fun to make, the more creative the better! Hope that helps.

One extracurricular I added in my own app was commissions, so if you do those, that would show initiative and responsibility. Joining competitions in robotics and engineering is a great idea, and art contests would help, too. I also definitely agree with the portfolio, and maybe you could post it somewhere that the college could see it, like uploading your coding projects or making stuff on Scratch. I hope that helps!

If you are that passionate about drawing and coding, maybe try to incorporate both these aspects into a project, such as building and coding an arduino prototype to draw some sort of portrait or drawing and go from there. There are a bunch of online resources for you to get started, but make sure that all your ECs are something that you are passionate about; admissions officers are really good at weeding out the applicants who do activities to just pad their application.
