Is it ok if I self study for a course?
I want to major in Political Science, and my school offered only AP government to sophomores this year. I wanted to take AP government, but my guidance counselor said it wasn’t necessary since I already take Government Honors. I want to go to an Ivy League or a UC and self studied for the AP Government test in May. Will colleges still appreciate this? This has been bothering me. I also don’t want to waste time taking other AP courses next year if they don’t offer me credit for political science in college? What AP classes actually offer credit for that major?

I am currently self-studying AP Micro and it is not as hard if you put in the time and effort. If you have a lot of ECs and don't have time, then you have to think about whether or not you will be committed. I recommend finding resources online before you start the course. If you are taking AP US GoPo, post another question and comment under here a link. I am currently taking it so I can give you the best resources.
Yes! Studying on your own for an AP exam is a viable course of action if it doesn't make sense to take the course, and it is definitely possible to earn a 5. You just need to choose the exam wisely, make sure you are diligent about studying, and use high-quality and relevant study material
My answer from staff and students at my school and what I plan on doing is yes. You don't actually have to take an AP course, as long as you take the AP exam and score high enough for your prospective college. I would, however, watch how many AP exams you cram into the end of one year, as that will be very stressful and not actually very productive. Make sure you prioritize some exams over others and don't put too much stress on yourself if this is your senior year.

Colleges will definitely see you as a motivated student for self studying for the ap gov test. The ap courses that count as credit for political science completely depends on the school. Some schools will take any score of 3, 4, or 5 on any test and give you credit, and some will only give you credit for 5s on specific tests. Definitely check out the school’s website to see what ap courses and scores are needed for credit

Where can you take the exam? I asked my counselors and they said we're not allowed to do that and get credit at our school.
