First steps for application process

I'm a rising senior. I want to do early action so I want all of my applications done by august, and all of them paid for or waivered by late august no later than early September. Should I get fasfa done first? I've requested reccomendation letters I'll review them and talk with my teachers; done my extracurriculars, and finished my SAT and will start on my essays very soon. But a lot of people say get your fafsa done first. I just wanna know where I should start so I can spend more time on my essays and getting into the schools I want to get into.

I'm pretty sure FAFSA opens on October 1 for seniors who are applying to college. Someone can double-check me if I'm wrong, but if I am not then I would definitely recommend working on applications and all that first.
