Test optional and SAT
Answered

Hi,

I have two questions:

1. I have a 1400 SAT, and the college board says that it is 97th percentile. But when I look at the percentile vs scores chart, I see that the 97th percentile score comes between 1450 to 1500. So what should I consider my final score as? 1400 or more?

2. Also, should I apply test-optional to Northwestern university for ED considering the fact that I'm international, applying for aid, and other parts of my application are above average for the university?

Thank you!

Collegeboard percentile charts give you 2 percentiles. 1. 97% from a National Representative Sample which means a random sample of people, not just SAT test takers. 2. and 93% based on SAT test takers. Since you are an SAT test taker, the 93% is more fitting for you, not the 97%. A 1470-1480 would be a 97% percentile score.

I would apply test optional because most applicants will have scores in the 1450-1550 range and submitting a 1400 would disadvantage you.

Good luck

1. Whatever percentile Collegeboard officially lists your score as, that is what you should consider your score percentile is. In this case, I would say that 97th percentile is accurate for your measurement.

2. Your SAT score of 1400 is lower than the Northwestern University average score of 1480, so I would probably apply as test-optional. General rule of thumb is that if your SAT Score is below the middle 50% of the college's average score, do not submit it.

Hi there @Paras, I agree with the other users here - in particular, I think @HelloHome provided a good response.
