Admissions Advice

What else can I do in the last week before I receive my admissions decision for my top college to raise my chances?
Answered

I applied ED to my top school, and I get my decision next week. Is there anything I should be doing in these last couple days to improve my chances of getting in? Some people have told me to call/email their admissions office so they can get to know me a little more, but what should I say? I’ve also visited the campus in person (the school is far from where I live) so is there any way that could help me as well?

Hi, waiting for your ED or EA decision can be hand-ringing and create anxiety but you have to trust the process. Some of these colleges have been doing college admissions for 250 years. Imagine having to wait for a physical letter to come in the mail just 30 years ago. That was even worse if the mail came late that year.

Listen to me now and believe me later, you DO NOT want to call or email the admissions office 1 week before decisions are made. That will only backfire and make you look desperate and foolish.

These days the best thing to do is wait until decisions come out. If the college you applied even cares about showing interest in the school (demonstrated interest), remember they already know how many times you've pulled up their school on your laptop or mobile phone and know every single data point you've clicked on because the put cookies on your devices.

So hopefully you will have some good news in a week or so. And if you get deferred or rejected, remember you can apply to bunch more schools in the meantime.

Stay patient but also have a back up plan.

Good luck.

Hi @Ryan27!

At this point, the only thing you can do is wait. Do NOT call the admissions office — at worst it can annoy them, and if they wanted to talk to applicants, they would have already set up an alumni interview.

For now I would just double check all your deliverables — test scores, transcript, etc. — and make sure they were all sent properly. Focus on keeping your grades up so there's no complications down the line and, beyond that, good luck!
