I was deferred from Columbia University, how do I maximize my chances of getting when when my grades have slipped?
Answered

Hi, I was recently deferred ED from Columbia University in the city of New York. I’m super scared since in the beginning of next year my mid-year transcript will be available to consider because this has honestly been the worst semester I’ve had in my entire academic career and my grades look really bad (I have a C and D). The C and D I got were for college classes I took (had really bad professors), and the other 2 college classes I took I got A’s in. Is there anything I can do that would maybe make my grades not carry as much weight in my admission decision? Or possibly somehow explain/mention this in letter of continued interest?

I'm sorry for your stress and concern about this deferral. I think the C and D grades will put you out of the running for RD. I hate to be the bearer of less than good news, but there are 50,000-55,000 RD applicants in the Columbia RD pool, for only 919 remaining seats since 650 were admitted ED (last year 1569 matriculated). So my best guess is that they will admit 1400 to fill those remaining 919 spots (60-65% yield on 2.67% RD acceptance rate).

I'm not sure that even if you wrote a LOCI with NEW significant information it would make much of difference at this point. I think most people would advise you to focus on other colleges and make your RD apps as good as possible.

Good luck and keep moving forward.
