Marine Biology Extracurriculars

Hey! I'm a sophmore in Austin, TX and I'm trying to get into UT Austin's Marine Biology program in a few years. I'm currently in the top 13% of my class (140/992) as of freshman year, and I think my rank will likely go up next time my transcript is updated. My current extracurriculars are band, Girl Scouts, and National Stem Honor Society, but I haven't been able to get any volunteer hours due to how busy band made me last semester. Can y'all give me any pointers on what other extracurriculars I can do to improve my odds of getting into UT?

Here are a few suggestions:

- Contact the Austin Aquarium to see if you could volunteer there.

- Set up your own aquarium or terrarium at home. If you created something like this and scientifically studied the ecosystem, you would surely have some interesting material for your college essays or even a publication!

- If you can make your way to a local pond, river, or lake, try studying the marine life there. You could make a DIY underwater ROV to do this.

- Start a marine bio club at your school.

- Start an initiative to educate K-12 students about marine bio. Perhaps you could make materials that would be useful for marine bio teachers.

Hope this helps!
