Would you go to a college in a state where abortions are not legal?

Men/Boys PLEASE DO NOT DO THE POLL!!!! Thanks

Whether you agree with overturning Roe V. Wade or not, I'd like to share that up to 26 American states out of 50 have either made it illegal or in the process of making it illegal to seek out an abortion.

For female college students and potential students, it's important to understand what you are committing to for 4 years when you chose to apply to a college in these 26 states. This affects not only Americans but anyone attending the colleges including Foreign Nationals.

Some students will not be affected detrimentally from this because of their wealth and privilege. If they accidentally get pregnant or are a victim of a sex crime which impregnates them, they can fly back home or to a state where abortions are legal.

However for many poor BIPOC young females the costs to travel and take time off and access this care may be prohibitive. If you are in college, you may have to take multiple days perhaps a week off to have an abortion versus a short visit in your college town.

Abortion laws are not limited to surgical procedures but also cover the medical abortion treatments like pills prescribed to induce a miscarriage during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Some States like California have laws requiring college campuses to provide medical (pill) abortions to students. As of today, these states and "trigger" states that are banning abortions within 5-30 days will not be giving any students access to such treatment.

While access to birth control and many proactive / preventative female reproductive healthcare options will continue to be available in all 50 states, its important to note that a young person seeking out such health and wellness care on their own may face some public scrutiny if you are used to going to Planned Parenthood for your annual gynecological exams or accessing birth control options.

I have made a list of States with some well branded colleges. If you live in that State for your 4 years of college you may be affected by the overturning of Roe V. Wade. Keep in mind that each state has their own independent set of rules and statutes with regards to abortion. Some states are certainly less flexible than others and I have not detailed this out here.

After Roe v. Wade was overturned leaving the right to abortion to the states. It's clear that the legality of abortion will be determined by the partisanship of the states. (https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2022/04/01/blue-states-enact-new-laws-to-create-abortion-havens) The blue states are trying the hardest to pass legislation to create abortion havens, while the red states are doing the opposite. Even in purple states, abortion eventually will be decided whether legal or illegal. There is no middle ground on this issue. As a result, the current polarization will deepen as people consider whether they will relocate to a state/region based on their situation and identity willingly or unwillingly. Blue states will become bluer, while red states will become redder. On the other hand, colleges' abortion policies will be ever more important to students. Major companies like Amazon and Tesla have already promised to cover funds for all costs regarding Abortion and its traveling. It's unsure if the major universities will follow. It will exacerbate the already precarious financial situation of certain private colleges or lower-ranked universities, which may lack the funds to support the abortion cost with even fewer students attending. It may diverge funds/donations that could be orginally be used for scholarships and educational programs to need and merit-based groups. So as abortion becomes more difficult to obtain in the future, the disparity between the upper to middle and lower classes will also widen.

Wait, Virginia is banning abortion? According to the NY Times map that I saw, they're not supposed to be passing any laws in the near future - at least, not in the next 5-30 days.

Some Stats like Texas have a complete ban while other like Virginia are a moving target where abortions are only allowed if they meet certain criteria. In VA they are also trying to ban abortions over 15 weeks. https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/state-facts-about-abortion-virginia
