Heres what I am thinking about for my "Why Us" essay for University of VermontBasically UVM has a program where you can raise up a cow. Growing up working on a farm during the summers was something really important to me, and this would be a good opportunity to continue that. (HOWEVER… this has nothing to do with my major as I am going into political science… any tips) is this a bad idea?
Thats a great idea! Super unique, and shows that you've done your research. I don't see much of an issue with it not connecting to your major, especially if your main personal statement touches on why you want to do political science, but there are definitely still ways to connect this essay to polisci. Farming is very political in many ways (GMO's, water usage, cow methane production, treatment of animals, etc.). You could briefly touch on the political perspective working on a farm gave you (as long as it's brief, remember to keep connecting back to the prompt).
Also, the cow part is great, but make sure you have some other examples of why you like the school :)
Good luck!
As others have said, this idea is creative and would make for a great essay! So long as you can talk about how your interests in political science and farming intersect, you will be set. For example, you could hypothetically talk about how your farming experience showed you that the sustainability of agribusiness could be improved, and you want to study political science so you can one day create policies that will benefit both farmers and the environment. Hope this helps!
I think this is a great idea to show that you have researched the school beyond your major. As long as it is something you can do outside your major, I would reference it as being something to make college feel like home and appreciating the chance to do things that interest you in addition to your major. You could then talk about your goals with your major
