Admissions Advice

What should students interested in art do?

Hi!

I would like to know what art students can do to increase their chances in college admission. For example, biology students can participate in research, or math students can apply to math olympiads. What can art students do that would both improve them and look good in their application. What can they do that would make them unique in art? Also, some universities like Cornell doesn't require SAT score from art students. Is it the same for other universities? For clarification, what I mean by art is specific to drawing and painting, not music or sculpture. Thanks in advance!

The most important thing you can do as an applicant interested in art is create a stellar portfolio. This CollegeVine blog post has tips that will break down what colleges are looking for in portfolios.

While many schools do not have Cornell's SAT policy for art applicants, they all weigh art portfolios heavily in the admissions process. An excellent portfolio can make up for an SAT score that isn't the greatest. Hope this helps!

I would say do any AP art. Also there are plenty of art contests that you can enter to boost your chances.
