I am in 9th grade and want to become a doctor, and I have already set my mind to being a doctor. Since, I am in 9th grade, I really don't know anything about the admission process in BS/MD programs. So please give me as detailed of an answer as possible!
Hi @sheetalkiran!
The procedure for applying to BS/MD programs is just like that of applying to 4-year colleges. The only difference would be some additional essays and (sometimes) mandatory admissions interviews.
For applying, you'll use Common App, Coalition Application, or whatever the colleges on your list accept.
The components of your application will be:
Academics:
GPA, class rank, course rigor, test scores (SAT and/or ACT)
Students usually take the SAT and/or ACT in their junior/senior year of high school.
Extracurriculars:
Activities that you participate in outside of class that contribute to your holistic development. Medicine-related extracurriculars that can be helpful are: shadowing a doctor, volunteering at clinics/hospitals, working as a scribe, etc.
Awards/honors:
Achievements
Demographics/family information
Essays:
The Common App essay/its equivalent, Why This College, Why Major, Why Med School, etc. are some common types of essays.
If a college on your list has a BS/MD program, you'll have to indicate whether you want to apply for it or not. From next year, what you can do is get good grades in rigorous classes (AP/honors) and get involved in extracurriculars related to medicine. You don't need to worry about essays right now.
Hope this helps!
