Questions about the courses rigor requirement of Ivies and other selective schools

Dear community,

I previously encountered some issues when trying to add up more AP courses to my curriculum. The main reason is that the teaching platform my school use has a beyond unreasonable grading system and everything on that platform is really outdated. The main reason is about the grading system though, which is extremely obstinate and makes proceeding in the course when you're trying to get an A nearly impossible.

Fortunately, I have found a great platform that is called outlier and offer multiple in-depth college courses. The user experience till now is exceedingly good and I feel I am going through each section quite smoothly just like I did in my honor courses. Overall it does not feel necessarily difficult compared to the high school courses I have taken.

So my question is what will be academically considered between being appropriate and outstanding for an Ivy or other very selective schools? Do five college courses meet the expectation(speaking only academically, excluding the extracurriculars for now)? I have heard students with one AP got into Yale but what could be the common requirement? Maybe 5-8 or even more?

Hi @Jai123456!

There's no specific requirement for AP or college courses for Ivy League applicants. It all depends on what you had available and what you chose to do. The students who got into Yale with one AP could've been admitted due to a lot of reasons. It could be that they took dual enrollment courses instead of AP or they didn't have a lot of APs available or they could've been athletes, children of donors, faculty children, or something like that.

You have taken honors courses, which though not as impressive as APs, are still the second most rigorous courses that you can take. For now, take whatever you feel you can handle (If you are confident enough, this doesn't have to be just 5). No need to overload yourself with too many courses, thinking that you need to get a certain number of courses done for getting into an Ivy.

Hope this helps!
