Can I get in?
Answered

I have maintained 4.0 gpa in my class 9 and 10 but in my class 11 my gpa dropped to 3.0. I have managed to get 3.7 gpa in my 1st semester of 12th grade will that11th grade gpa affect my chances of getting into top 30 universities?

Hi @ImPratap_31

Admission is complicated and depends on a lot of factors, so there is no situation where one answer fits all. Firstly, it depends on the college's selectivity (how prestigious is it). Since you're applying to top 30 universities, it may play a major role. However, if you have an explanation for this sudden drop in grades, colleges will be eager to look past it. As @AdaH mentioned, if an emergency or other circumstance led to you getting lower grades, you can mention that on the "Additional Information" section on the Common Application. You also mention that your grade improved in 12th grade. As this is the case, colleges will know that you overcame whatever challenge you faced, meaning that this doesn't impact your application process in a majorly negative way.

The grades and test scores objectively matter. A stupendous essay, EC achievements or recommendation letters will not overcome grades to test scores (if they are lower then college's typical range). Your cumulative HS GPA might make you a strong applicant for colleges where 50% of incoming Freshman GPAs/test scores are below yours. With that being said, you should still stretch to apply to the colleges on top of YOUR list (not necessarily top 30 of colleges). Spend some time figuring out what's important to you and apply to schools where YOU will be happy and can afford.

Hey there @ImPratap_31!

I can't tell you for sure what schools you'll get into, because even extremely talented and capable students get denied from top universities all the time. If there's a reason for your drop in GPA (such as a family member dying, an illness, or other circumstance) you can explain that on the Common App. If you want to calculate your chances at a university, you can use the Chancing Simulator under the 'Schools' tab.

Good luck!
