Hi everyone! I'm looking to rack up some good volunteer hours, and I'm wondering if anyone has a certain non-profit or organization they've volunteered at that they enjoyed or had an overall good experience. I want to help people, but animal shelters are good too. For reference, I live in Texas. I know that's general but I'm hoping someone could offer me some guidance. If not a specific organization, can someone let me know what colleges look for when it comes to volunteering?
Thank you!!
Lauren,
My main suggestion is to make sure you are doing something you enjoy doing while volunteering! If there is also a certain profession you are thinking of you could do some volunteering for that as well (with animal shelters, if you would like to work with animals, you must have experience with them). As far as animal shelters go for volunteering at, if you are near Houston I know there is a Best Friends animal shelter there. If you would like to help people then you could look into any retirement homes in the area or if there are any resale shops (GoodWill, Red Cross stores, etc.) that allow volunteers to come help out. You can also check out your local library as in most cases they will have a volunteer program set up. For specific volunteering for colleges I would say that it depends on the college and how they value volunteer hours vs. grades vs. awards, etc. This is all of my wisdom right now, I hope that this can help you!
Much luck,
Sakura
Colleges look for long term commitment, something that connects to your passions/interests, matches your "theme", and something that utilizes your skills in volunteering.
This CollegeVine blog post will explain what colleges are looking for in volunteering activities and where you can find new opportunities to serve others. Hope this helps!

Hi! Do you have any recommendations for healthcare or science related organizations for volunteering?
