how difficult is it to switch majors in college? especially ut dallas and texas a&m
i'm a junior in high school in texas and i'm currently thinking of majoring in actuarial science. but i'm also open to data science. what factors are considered when switching majors?
In general, it is easy to change majors in college if you are a freshman or sophomore. Since most colleges will have students take core requirement classes during their first two years, you will usually not lose much progress in your education by switching your major before junior year. The change would be even easier for you, since you are considering two STEM majors that will have similar core requirements.
Switching majors in junior year is a different story. It is either not allowed by colleges or will delay your graduation date. In any case, the process of changing your major is simple and very similar at all colleges. It involves a discussion with your academic counselor, and often, completing an application. The application will ask you for academic info, in addition to an essay about why you want to change your major and what your goals are for your education going forward.

Hi @Teja.sviii!
Most majors have certain requirements that you need to fulfill to switch. If you are admitted for (suppose) Applied Mathematics-Actuarial Science track at Texas A&M and you want to change your major to CS, you will need certain courses to have been completed and will need a certain GPA. Each major has its own requirements and these requirements can be found by googling TAMU change of major.
Hope this helps!
