My percentage increased from 80% in grade 9 to 93% in grade 10. It dropped from 93% in grade 10 to 83% in grade 11. In Grade 12, it rose up again to 93%. How will this fluctuation affect my admissions chances? My school uses a comparative grading system. Therefore, I have mostly As and a couple Bs in all my years of high school. I have decent extracurriculars. I just want to know if my academics will raise a red flag on my application due to the fluctuation of grades. My SAT score was 1450.
Admissions officers will not see your grade drop as a red flag, since you completely recovered from the drop after one year. The only downside to your grades dropping is that it will affect your cumulative weighted and unweighted GPA. Both of these will still average out to a decent number, though it may not be seen as high by Top 20 schools.
You can compensate for your GPA by earning a high score on the SAT or ACT. Explaining any extenuating circumstances that led to your drop in grades is also a good idea. Hope this helps!
It's hard to tell how your yo-yo fluctuations in grades is going to affect your college decisions. Someone with an average of 87 (80+93+83+93) is not considered an A student but a B+ student. I think you already know that your GPA is below what most peers are going to have when they apply to certain colleges. Although your upward trend is a positive indication that you are trying hard right now, your track record shows that you have for different reasons had two years of high school with low B averages.
Therefore I caution you not to pick too many reach colleges where the average admitted GPA is 3.8-4.0 but focus on colleges that are a good fit. Your SAT is a very good score that will help you get into a target school.
Good luck okay.
