Admissions Advice

Another rejection from UIUC, how should I continue?? I know I have a pretty unique situation and I HAVE to get through t

Hello, A2C redditors. I applied to about 13 colleges and I have already received rejections from an ivy, NYU and UIUC(computer as 1st major and math as 2nd). Now I really do wonder what will happen to the rest of the colleges I applied to.

The remaining colleges include ASU, Penn State, Ohio State, U of Minnesota TC, U of Washington and UWM. I have a 4.0 UW and I play several instruments and several languages. Below are the courses I chose to take during my whole high school career:

ALGEBRA 1

BIOLOGY

CONSUMER MATH

ECONOMICS

ENGLISH 09

ENGLISH 10

ENGLISH 11

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

FRENCH I

HEALTH AND FITNESS

INTEGRATED ALGEBRA

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

INTRODUCTION TO CODING

MATH MODELS & APPLICATIONS

MUSIC APPRECIATION

US GOVERNMENT

WORLD HISTORY

COMPUTER ENGINEERING

HN ALGEBRA 2

HN CHEMISTRY

HN GEOMETRY

HN PRE-CALCULUS

Calculus I Dual Enrollment

College Algebra Dual Enrollment

(My school offered AP classes but the courses are almost impossible to finish with an A or even B because of the almost unusable platform and I have to negotiate with the school officials in order to take honor courses as an adult)

For those of you who wonder why I took so many introductory elementary math courses, it is because I receive tortures from my original family and my father kept me literally from doing anything and I had no chance to go to any school. All I was able to finish was my elementary school but I refused to let that break me and I tried to do what everybody else do in school by myself through self-studying, while receiving no support from my family(they did not even know I found a way back to school and were applying to colleges again).

That explains why I had to take a lot of introductory math courses because all I was allowed to finish was elementary school so I need a lot of material to get myself very familiar with these school's math stuffs(But luckily I went through this math sequence and managed to complete Calculus I in a very brief time). I very much cherish this chance which allows me to get back to school again since there is no chance while I was receiving physical torments from my father.

By the way, I am an intl student. So I had to even teach myself multiple world languages in every possible way COMPLETELY BY myself to make sure I can learn stuff at a US high school, after being only able to finish elementary school and since my family did not provide any support for me. But I am thankful because at least, I finally had a chance to learn, unlike before when torments happened. So I must make sure I continue no matter whether I have a teacher or not or I receive any support from my family or not.

Back to the topic though, do you guys think I have a chance of getting into the remaining schools I applied to? Should I do anything to save myself from this rejection tornado(do not forget I am an intl)?

After I received physical torments from my father which kept me being able to go to no school at all, I had only about three years to learn everything including multiple languages, instruments and high school academic stuff(I had to start everything based on knowledge from an elementary school and something through self-studying). But I made sure every day my schedule was full of these agendas and I managed to complete them pretty well for three years(languages, piano, saxophone and HS academics, I must find a way to complete them from scratch).

I am sure I am able to finish those extracurriculars like competitions and research, but due to the situation that a lot of years were wasted because of my father's torments, now I am focusing on is to finish all the academic stuffs before college.)

My situation is pretty unique, so I might as well find my own unique way to get into college but I really wanna hear what you guys may suggest I do. So what do you guys think I should do in order to get into a good college and do I have a chance in the previous schools I mentioned(ASU, Penn State, Ohio State, U of Minnesota TC, U of Washington and UWM)?

I think that you have a real shot at getting into the rest of the schools on your list. You are not alone with your experience. As an admissions advisor, I have seen an overall trend this admissions cycle - Top 50 schools, such as the Ivies and UIUC, have become fiercely competitive, while brand name universities below them in rankings have become more accepting of top candidates.

You can also increase your chances by updating colleges about your unique circumstances. Though application resubmissions are not allowed, you can always send an email to the general email of each admissions office (e.g. admissions@illinois.edu). You may need to send your message through a contact form, and if a school does not list an admissions email, you should call the office using a virtual US phone number and ask for an email address during your call. If you already wrote about your personal situation in the Additional Information section of the Common App, then there is no need to take these steps.

Hope this helps!

I think you'll be okay, one way or another. I'm not sure what else there is to do at this point, but maybe someone else will have a better answer for that. Right now, I would try not to worry too much. You still have a lot of schools left. And the ones that you didn't get into are some of the hardest ones on the list. The only other thing I would say is that if you get deferred and have the chance to, make sure they know your story and the challenges you've faced to get there. Make sure they know what you told us. And worst case, you can always take a gap year now if you need to and try again next year. I hope this helped. Good luck!
