During this cycle more and more high-achieving students applied to Top Liberal arts colleges like Colby pushing the applications from 16891 to 17800 and lowering the admit rate from 7.45% to 6.42%. If this trend continues we will see schools like Swarthmore, Pomona, and Colby in the 5%+ range in a couple of years.
I definitely think LACs will start to see the number of applications they receive increase in the next few years. For many, the personalized feel of the classes and the often-generous aid will convince them to apply, especially as the reputation of these colleges skyrockets as it has been since the 90s and 00s. (Look at Williams College; it was a full eight ranks above Harvard in the latest Forbes Top 500 Colleges List!)
What I wonder, though, is if these colleges will ever begin to increase their enrollment to match the increasing demand for spots, such as some did (partially caused by over-enrollment). Thoughts?
I hope they will build more dorms at these places because they certainly have enough land, endowment funds, and general support of alumni to spread their wings.
