Is it worth it to retake the ACT and take more AP classes?
Answered

When I took the ACT I was not mentally prepared and got a lower score than I would have liked(24 composite). My math and English scores are what really brought it down. I can retake the ACT this summer but risk getting an even worse score, as the college I am looking into does not superscore. My GPA is about the 3.5-3.6 range and my teacher urges me to take more AP classes to boost it. Is it really worth it to retake the ACT(I haven't taken the SAT yet) and hopefully do better? I'm just scared because the college I'm looking at is very hard to be accepted into and I don't think I have a chance at all with my GPA and ACT score.

You should absolutely try studying for the ACT (both material and test-taking strategy if you feel like that might've been part of your error) and taking the SAT. Some people score much higher on one than other. If you get a worse score, you don't have to report it to your college, but don't overfocus on this college and base all your decisions on it since you don't know if you're going. I hope you have other options including safeties and targets that you're also happy going to.

As for APs, everyone can handle a different amount, I don't know how many you've taken and the grades you've gotten in each class. Some people take 1-2 their entire high school career, at my school taking 7-10+ is normal and I managed it. Choose APs based first on career/major interests, then personal interests like the arts, but look into course breakdowns because some have prerequisites or are very difficult, like the physical sciences. A lot of people take AP Physics 1 with no background in physics and flunk the exam (guilty).
