I would consider designing mood boards as a start to becoming a professional designer because everyone starts somewhere, however, if you truly want to grow in the profession, disregarding the time it takes to, I would treat mood boards as baby steps as though they can be visually appealing and serve purpose they are common steps for most designers. If you want to stand out and such, I would suggest looking around at fellow local or up and coming designers to further build upon your own personal charm that will make you stand out. So to sum this all up, yes, treat moodboards as steps to ur final goal which should be something you genuinely love and enjoy making whilst also supporting your life and future.
