Extracurriculars for an aspiring author?
Answered

I'm going to be entering 11th grade soon and I need to know how I can get more involved. I have an unweighted 4.0 GPA (and above for weighted) and I write stories and poems in my free time. I also have been in the AVID program since middle school.

The problem is, academics and AVID alone won't help me stand out so much in applications.

I'm volunteering for my youth court jury, and I want to broaden my horizons. After school, will I go off campus to a psychology class, so I don't know how those activities are possible. Suggestions for any activities I should try?

- Participate in writing competitions

- Try to get your poems/stories published as a book or in newspapers/journals/magazines, etc.

-Upload your work on writer-reader engagement apps like Wattpad (maybe not the best example, but something similar 😭)

- Teach creative writing to elementary schoolers

- Start a writing/poetry/book club

Hope this helps! Good luck :))

A school newspaper or literary magazine is a great place to get your stuff published and can buff up your activities section on a college app.

I'm not sure if this applies to you but my local public library has writing clubs and competitions for students of all ages! I would check out if there is anything similar to that around you because it would be an amazing opportunity!

First and foremost and if the school has a newspaper club that is a fantastic way to begin. Speech and Debate may also be useful. But if all else fails, start your own club!
