Family Obligations on Application

Hi,

On the Apply Texas Application, it asks whether I have a family obligation that prevents me from participating in extracurricular activities.

If my parents don't allow me to participate in these activities, especially at school (I was only a part of 1 club at school for junior year and none in the other years), should I put this here?

If so, how should I phrase it?

I would definitely put this since admissions will be comparing you to other people with more ECs, but only if you feel comfortable stating exactly why your parents would not allow you to participate. You could phrase it like this, "due to my parent's concerns about my safety (using this as an example but you would tailor it specifically to your parent's reason), I have been kept from participating in many of the clubs and sports offered at my school. My parents have tried to do what is best and they believe that while keeping me from actively participating had potential downfalls, it was ultimately the best decision for me. With this being said, I was able to participate in one club at my school...."

I would then go into detail about how that club influenced you and what you learned in it. Also, be sure to stress any other ECs you have done: any volunteering, babysitting/a job, going to church, or pretty much anything at all you do.
