Research on nuclear fusion for highschoolers

I'm very interested in nuclear fusion, so much so that I'm doing a school project on nuclear fusion (and into a senior project, hopefully). To make it into a senior project, I need to shadow a professional in the field or do my own on the field.

However my school's senior project advisor told me that this subject might be challenging to find a mentor to shadow, and they suggested I change my study focus to a related field, but I'm not interested in the field they suggested.

Finding a mentor or research opportunity in nuclear fusion would be ideal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
