Are leadership positions REALLY that important? (for top schools)
Answered

I was wondering how important leadership positions are in the college application process. I was thinking of running for the treasurer of my grade, but now I'm wondering if it will even help me. Would doing this look good on my college app? (for top unis)

Yes they are very important, if you don’t have any leadership roles and you don’t have any top honors awards then it will be impossible to compete with others in admissions into top colleges, even with competitive grades and test scores. College’s value the quality of your extracurriculars (i.e having leadership positions) very much.

However, take note that leadership positions aren’t always in a school setting. You can start an independent research project, write and publish a book, or even start a blog or podcast that gets many listeners. Anything that showcases what you’re passionate about while showing college’s that you have the drive to put in many hours into something. The more engagement you get is also better, for example having a podcast with 10,000 listeners is more impressive that having a podcast with 100 listeners.

Good luck with formulating your application!
