So, I'm a rising freshman (as you can see in the title) and I've done well on academics my entire life. My average has never gone below a 96 and I've been on honor roll since first grade. I'm a fully bilingual Puerto Rican, I have a 4.0 GPA, and I'll list my extracurriculars down here ⬇️

2. NHS (2023-present)
3. 70 hours of community service (tutoring and helping the elderly)
4. Math Club
5. Film Appreciation Club
6. I run a blog dedicated to providing spelling bee competitors with competition advice.
7. Proficient in guitar, been playing for around 2 years
8. Been doing art for 10 years
9. Participated in Island-wide Math Olympics hosted by the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez
10. Set design and script for a play at a theater camp
11. Received the President's Award for Educational Excellence, a medal for highest grade in English class, and a medal for the highest grade in Technology class at my 8th grade graduation
Current College List: University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras, University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, Mt. Holyoke, Barnard, Brown, Embry-Riddle, Smith, USC
Intended Major: I'm not sure yet, but I'm mostly leaning towards double majoring in linguistics and math/engineering/computer science.
My school doesn't offer many APs, but I plan on taking them all since they're so scarce.
I know I'm only a freshman, but looking into college things is fun lol. Anyways, am I alright for now if I wanna get into an Ivy or school with a low acceptance rate?
Wow! Only a rising freshman? You are in very good shape my friend. One thing I would note is that colleges do not tend to look into Middle School achievements/accolades, so you would want to find a way to earn achievements in high school because they will not pay attention to Middle School.
On the other hand, if you keep up these grades and extracurriculars, you are in really good shape! And yes take all the APs you can if you plan on applying Ivy (but don’t wear yourself out lol). One thing particularly I would suggest if you are applying to Ivy Leagues is to find ways to demonstrate your intended majors through your extracurriculars.
So for linguistics:
- Speech Club
- Debate Club
- Foreign Language Clubs
- Theater
- Exchange Programs
- Another good one is getting involved in foreign communities, for example, some of my friends volunteer and travel to a local Spanish home and trailer park and watch the kids there, play with them, and practice their Spanish
- Any publication related things such as school newspaper, literary magazine, etc.
And the same goes for math/engineering/computer science: Check out coding camps, become familiar with softwares, take classes, join clubs pertaining to these interests all to show your dedication to these areas of study.
But also make sure to balance out these things with the rest of your life. You’re a freshmen and still got four years of high school left, so make sure to take the time and enjoy them! But I get it, I was just like you when I was a freshmen and was always doing college searches. Hope this helps!
Best of luck!
You’re barely a freshman babes take a chill pill
