Clarity of deadline day for college application

I'm an international student. Our schools begin in February and end in December. I was thinking of using my final year reports (which will be out mid January) to apply to colleges.

I see a lot of colleges post their application deadline as January 2nd, so are we supposed to submit our application by January 2nd or do we get like a month?
