8th PSAT 1160-Good??
Answered

Hi!

I have an open mind on what colleges I would like to attend, and I’m trying to figure out what kinds of colleges I can get into with an 8th grade PSAT score of 1160. That was my first PSAT I’ve ever taken. I got 680 in Reading and Writing and 480 in Math. However, when I took that PSAT last year, our teacher hadn’t taught us the Advanced Math and Trig sections, so to be fair I think I could do better now in math. I want to get into a good college but not one where I’m drowning in debt the rest of my life if I don’t get a great scholarship. I know my 8th grade PSAT won’t actually affect my college admissions, but I’m just wondering, compared to that, how I’ll do my junior/senior year. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Thanks!

You have a strong reading score! If you continue to learn diligently and then properly prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT, you will do great. It all depends on the time and effort you put into it. I was studying for the SAT at the same time, so i got a decent score. Qualifed me as a Commended Student. Though I did not earn a scholarship from NMSQT, it did help boost my application to receive a 3/4 merit scholarship from my dream college.

You have great awareness. College debt is concerning, but I promise there are ways to minimize or avoid it. Once you get older, you can work a job to start saving, take college level classes to transfer into your degree for much less, and apply for scholarships specific to your major of interest. Avoid wasting your time on sweepstakes scholarships or super big, general scholarships. Find ones where you will have some advantage because of a skill, experience, or major you want.

You can also start special savings accounts that build more interest and "lock" so you can't take out the money until a specified date. This is definitely something to research with your parents. I wish my parents knew about it when I was in middle school so we could get a head start!

Hope this helps. Lmk if you have any more questions!
