I am currently in 9th grade, progressing to sophomore after the break. However, my freshman year GPA was 3.76 out of 4.0, and I am aiming for straight 4.0s from sophomore year to the first semester of senior year. I am also aiming for 1550 for SAT scores. If I get all these scores, will my freshman year grade affect university admission? I am trying to go to UC Berkeley, Stanford, Georgia Tech, and Princeton. I am an international student, graduating in 2028, and trying to take physics and astronomy in college.
Your freshman year GPA does affect your final high school GPA and is also looked at by colleges. However, many colleges are more lenient when looking at freshman year grades because they understand that there is a transition period of getting used to a heavier workload. Universities are really looking for improvement throughout your high school years, so if you continue to take more challenging courses and do well in them you should be just fine.
Regarding your comment on SAT scores, a 1550 is very doable with some studying and would boost your application even more, distracting from a low freshman year GPA. Also, if you get a 4.0 GPA for every other year of high school your final cumulative GPA will be a 3.94, which is quite strong. Assuming this 4.0 is on an unweighted scale, your profile may become even stronger when your weighted GPA and difficult courses are considered.
I'm sure you will do great, good luck!
