Will a B+ in AP Calc BC senior year semester 1 grade affect my application immensely?
Answered

Hello collegeviners! I am an international student (Canadian passport) who has already applied to the colleges in my tags for RD. I applied first interest theatre arts & performing studies, and second interest political science/government.

I'm really worried about my GPA for this semester T0T I already have a 3.91 uw gpa, 1550 sat, and took 8 ap tests (four 4s four 5s). I'm taking 3 aps this year, one of them being AP Calc BC. I feel like I'll be getting a B+ this semester (this math teacher has personally violated me before, btw), and hopefully the rest of the classes being an A. I got a 5 on AP Calc AB in junior year.

Our school doesn't rank, but I know I'm the top 10th percentile at school, and the highest grade we can get is an A. I have mostly tier 2 extracurriculars (mostly arts related), with some tier 1 extracurriculars in mock trial and various community service.

The meat of the question is: Will a B+ in my mid-year report throw AOs off and ultimately get me rejected? There's really nothing I can do except score immensely well on tomorrow's test, but my anxiety is killing me right now.

I hope everyone who is reading this has an amazing day. I hope all your dreams come true!!

I don’t think it will necessarily affect you. Everything else in your application sounds amazing, and admissions officers look at your record as a whole, not just one grade. A B+ in AP Calc BC—especially when you’ve already proven your math ability with a 5 on AP Calc AB—won’t overshadow your strong GPA, test scores, and impressive extracurriculars.

I would suggest talking to your guidance counselor if the B+ was a result of conflict or stress from the teacher. They can provide context in your school report or counselor letter, which can help admissions officers understand the situation better. Colleges know senior year can be challenging, and one slightly lower grade in a tough class won’t derail an otherwise stellar application.
