should I disclose addiction on common app?
Answered

current junior, but ive started wondering/worrying about this

my freshman year i suffered from pretty intense addiction which led to various mental problems such as depression, thus impacting my academic performance and making my freshman year grades abysmal. Should I disclose this on the extra circumstances section of an application or will it give the AO a negative bias against me?

I think it truly depends. On one side, I would say YES be honest but ONLY if you are going to mention how you've gotten through it in your essay, but the other part of me is saying NO because like you said, the AO could have a negative bias against you.

My honest opinion is you should disclose it and be proud that you've overcome addiction. I don't care what the AO says; you should be proud of how far you've come. If they hold a negative bias against you, then that clearly wasn't the right school. I wish you the best of luck in your essays. Be proud of what you've done and what you've overcome.

Honesty is key, plus the fact you are willing to put it out there to a whole bunch of randos on the internet and we are not judging whatsoever, I would be honest. It's really brave of you to put it out there and I admire your bravery so much harperharper. I also have depression and know how hard it is.

Thank you for sharing your story!!!
