2.4 GPA first trimester of freshman year

I'm a freshman, and for my first trimester of my freshman year I had a 2.4 GPA. I got an F in an elective (sewing class) and a C in history. I'm now in my second trimester and have all A's and B's. I'm aiming to receive all A's moving forward to get my GPA up. Will this affect my chances in getting into a good university, because of that F and 2.4 GPA for first trimester?

Absolutely! Depending on your major, the low grades will just show your weak points when doing an overall study. You're also a freshman which gives you a lot more wiggle room compared to a junior or senior. When writing your essays or additional info, you could explain this to the colleges. (especially if you have something happening that caused a slip in studying/focus or you just had a hard time adjusting to high school) You could also give an underdog story with your essays. But your goal should be consistency for the rest of high school, maintaining high to average grades shows your range in academia. If your grades remain high, it shows that something was probably just wrong that trimester.
