hi, i'm a current high school sophomore looking to improve my extracurriculars!
so far my grades are pretty strong--4.5 GPA, straight A+'s through freshman year (i took AP hug, honors bio, honors english, algebra 2, and chinese 1) and this year i'm taking AP euro, AP seminar, AP calc AB, honors english, honors chem, and chinese 2
while i'm pretty confident that i can keep being a good student and have a decently high GPA throughout high school, I'm starting to get worried about extracurriculars...
currently all i have is:
- varsity tennis (was on jv last year)
- minor board position on science olympiad
- model UN
- girl scouts (its pretty meaningless atm since i haven't started my community service project)
~ this year i wanna join national honors society too
in general im interested in STEM and maybe medical field, but to be honest i really don't know what career path i wanna take, which makes it difficult to commit to a certain direction as far as projects go
i have literally 0 volunteer hours, no internship, no job, no family tragedy, no nonprofit or passion project, no research paper published, no coded app, no national competitions won.... (can you tell that my peers r doing A LOT of stuff and its making me insecure)
and on top of it, i barely have time to SLEEP between tennis and studying and doing homework.. i can't fathom how other people are doing so much cool extracurricular stuff ..!
do you guys have any advice for how to start up some good extracurriculars in my free time? what extracurriculars are worth starting (both for college apps and for genuine advancement/ fulfillment) how are people getting all these cool projects (literally how r people pulling opportunities out of thin air?) how do you balance school with side projects? ..how do I stop feeling BEHIND all my peers?? any help is much appreciated, thank you!! :')
Since you're in 10th grade, I would say don't put too much pressure on yourself. Since you don't know what field you're interested in, I would base your projects off of your favorite class, one of your extracurriculars, or something already happening around you. For example, while I did know that I wanted to pursue a Computer Science degree, I didn't have any projects until this year through the community around me. I've been able to balance it because the project is an independent elective according to my school schedule.
The falling behind feeling can be turned into motivation. Instead of seeing your peers as just better than you, see their progress as milestones that you can hit. What have they done that you could learn from or use as a guidelines for your extracurriculars?
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions! ⁽⁽ଘ( ˊᵕˋ )ଓ⁾⁾
