Extracurricular Ideas for Music and Psychology/Mental Health

Hi! I'm a rising senior and I want to strengthen my extracurriculars on my application. I love music and the arts and I plan on majoring in Psychology because I love learning about people and the mind. I think I'll major in Developmental Psychology because I especially love children. What are some above and beyond and out-of-the-box extracurricular ideas for mixing together science and music (bonus if it involves children :)?

Thank You!!

Greetings Willimiah,

1. Taking developmental psychology classes at your local college.

2. Building relationships with the teachers at this college so that you can work with college students or, better yet, conduct a research of your own that involves music, psychology, and children (e.g. how music genre affects the reaction of the prefrontal cortex in children age six through eight)

3. Volunteer at a music therapy place.

4. Volunteer at a day care

5. Developmental psychology clubs

6. Attending a professional psychology conference

7. Number 6 but present your research (e.g. a science fair but for psychology, or a science fair that accepts psychology subjects)

8. Developmental psychology blog where you discuss what you learned

Pick your poison(s).

Remember not to give psychology advice directly/1-on-1, I believe that is against the standard of psychologists.

Regards,

Eric B.

To add to the previous answer, this CollegeVine blog post has some more examples of extracurriculars related to psychology and mental health. Also, this post has some ideas for musical activities. Hope this helps!
