Business Psych major at UCSD or Psych Major at CSUs?

Hello!

I really want a job in the I-O field when I graduate college. Currently, I am doing my undergraduate degree in Psychology. I'm a second year in community college and I am transferring out in the fall. I've applied to UC's and CSUs. To specify, UCSD, UCI, CSULB, SDSU, and SJSU.

I'm wondering if I transfer to UCSD (University of California, San Diego), would it be better if I changed majors to business psychology? Or should I stay as a Psychology major and transfer to a CSU instead? I am most definitely planning on getting a master's degree, I just don't know where yet. I'm still debating on whether or not I want a PhD. Anyone have some advice?

It depends on what you want in a college. CSU will be cheaper, UCSD might be seen as more elite to employers, but their campus might not be everyone's style- there's a huge highway in the middle of it so it's not as "campus-y." Business psych will likely be seen as more useful than such a broad major like psychology, but it truly depends. If you find a CSU you love, pick it!

Thank you so much! I visited the campus recently and actually loved it and La Jolla. I was worried about it being too selective of a major since I was told by my first professor that if you pick too specific of a major, then it would limit your master school major options.

If your long-term goal is I-O psychology and you already plan on getting a master's, I would focus more on choosing the school where you can do well, get research experience, and keep your GPA strong. A regular psychology degree from a solid program can still lead into I-O psych at the graduate level.

I also would not switch to business psychology only because the title sounds closer to your career goal. Check the actual courses and opportunities first. Research experience, statistics, internships, and relevant coursework may matter more for your next step.
