Best college for computer science at UC San Diego?

I'm applying to UCSD and want to major in computer science. Does anyone know which college within UCSD is the best for that major? Also, what are the differing characteristics between the colleges within UCSD?

UC San Diego is a great choice for computer science! It's important to note that at UCSD, the computer science major is offered through the Jacobs School of Engineering and is not specific to any one of the undergraduate colleges. The college you choose within UCSD determines general education requirements, living arrangements, and advising support; it doesn't have a direct influence on your major or the quality of computer science education.

To help you decide, here's a brief overview of each college's philosophy and general education requirements:

1. Revelle College: Known for its well-rounded general education program with a strong emphasis on liberal arts and rigorous requirements in various subjects such as science, humanities, and foreign language.

2. John Muir College: Follows the philosophy of a "spirit of self-sufficiency and individual choice." The general education requirements here are more flexible, allowing students to select courses that suit their interests.

3. Thurgood Marshall College: Focused on fostering cultural responsiveness and social justice. General education requirements explore the role of diverse communities in relation to social justice and the development of societies.

4. Earl Warren College: Emphasizes a balance between breadth and depth of knowledge. The general education requirements include two programs: the Warren Writing program and the Program of Concentrated Studies, which aims to complement students' majors.

5. Eleanor Roosevelt College: Focuses on developing global citizens. This college has a diverse curriculum with emphasis on language and culture, including a mandatory study abroad or approved internship experience.

6. Sixth College: Encourages students to explore connections between culture, art, and technology through interdisciplinary learning. The general education requirements cover topics like ethics, media, and technology.

7. Seventh College: Envisions the future through emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The college's general education curriculum is centered around the pressing global issues of climate change, poverty and inequality, food and water, and migrations.

When selecting the right college for you within UCSD, consider the general education requirements and the philosophy of each college that aligns with your own interests and values. Since you'll be majoring in computer science, think about how each college's requirements and values can complement your major and long-term goals. Good luck with your application!
