How impressive are my extracurriculars for a top school?
Answered

Hello,

I am a rising senior and I'll be applying as an international student for the applied maths major this fall. Below is the list of the extracurriculars I have done throughout high school, which is not much because I moved to the United States at the onset of COVID and did not know about clubs and the extracurriculars offered outside school.

- I have a food blog with a companion YouTube channel and Instagram account that promotes a healthy, plant-based lifestyle accessible to all. (not a very popular channel)

- I also have a math YouTube channel with links to self-made worksheets for students to view for a quick review or study instead of going to tuition. (again, not a very popular channel).

- I am the Project Coordinator/Vice President for my school's Science Club this upcoming year.

- I am in our school District's Navy JROTC where I have earned several ribbons and 1 award.

- I volunteered at clean-ups held by my school's Environmental Club.

- This is not exactly a traditional extracurricular but something I do at home (outside of school): I cook most family meals in our house.

- I also love art (especially acrylic on canvas) and have been doing so since I was 7 years old.

Kindly provide guidance as to how these activities will be perceived by a top school.

Hmm I will be just brutally honest here and tell you that they probably won't be perceived as very impressive or unique. Please don't interpret this as meaning that you're not a unique or smart person.

Considering that you're a rising senior, there isn't much I can really suggest you should do at this point. Maybe there's something interesting you could do with your interest in acrylic painting? Start some sort of a non-profit that's got something to do with art?

In any case, I wish you good luck, and keep us updated about how things go :))

It really depends on how you present them. If you can explain the amount of work that's involved in running a YouTube channel and cooking for a family, etc. I think the admissions officers will be impressed. I can tell just through your comment that you are passionate and dedicated and that's what's really important.

Definitely mention your difficulties with COVID and being an international student, they will understand.

Good luck!
