Will starting a club not related to my intended major be okay?

I'm trying to cofound a debate club at my school. I'm planning on going into biology so obviously a debate clubs isn't really related. I've heard two different answers to my question and I'm not sure what to do. Some say that its not in line with my theme so it will make it look like I'm only doing it for it to look good when applying for college. Others say I should go through with it because its something I really want to do and it will look good for college. What should I do?

Start the club! If you truly enjoy debate, the club will thrive because you enjoy what you’re doing. Clubs are meant to be a fun way to get involved in different things, even if it’s not your intended career path. Colleges will look and see that you started up a debate club, which is impressive since running a club takes a lot of work. If you guys plan to compete as well, winning in competitions not only is a personal success, but will look great for both your high school and potential colleges! People at my school, including myself, have started up clubs not necessarily in a career path they want, but a club with a focus that interests them. I can tell you the most successful clubs are the ones led by people who truly care about what they’re doing. Good Luck!
